District Mission Prayer . . .
Dear
Heavenly Father, we praise You for planting a congregation
in the heart of Ontario's playland in Christ Our Hope
Lutheran Church in Collingwood. With no other Lutheran
presence nearby, bless their outreach as they serve many
population centres within an hour's drive from their
strategic location. Grant them points of connection and open
doors for ministry there as thousands of cars pass that way
daily. As they continue with their divine services, Bible
studies, daily Matin devotions, Lenten services and plans
for an afternoon Easter VBS outreach, increase opportunities
for more children and families to find their joy and
abundant life in Christ. As Pastor Maher instructs new
people in the doctrines of faith in the Adult Instruction
Class, raise up spiritual leadership in families that places
prayer and praise ahead of play. Grant this for the sake of
Christ who did not seek to please Himself, but sacrificed
Himself out of love for us all. Amen. |

Ukrainian Ordination Coming to Kitchener . . .
(March 28, 2010 @ 3:00 pm)
Lutheran Church–Canada President Robert Bugbee will ordain
Candidate Oleg Schewtschenko on Palm Sunday, March 28, at
Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kitchener, Ontario. President
Bugbee is officiating at the request of Bishop Viktor
Gräfenstein of the Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches of
Ukraine (SELCU). Schewtschenko has accepted the call to
SELCU’s congregation in Odessa, a southern Ukrainian city of
over 1 million residents on the Black Sea, and will be a
clergy member on its roster.
Schewtschenko, 28, a native of Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine,
studied at the Kamenka Seminary in his homeland, and later
at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Oberursel, Germany.
He came to Canada in 2007 to study at Concordia Lutheran
Theological Seminary, St. Catharines, Ontario. The St.
Catharines professors were instrumental in enrolling him in
a distance learning program of London University in England,
which will eventually make it possible for him to receive an
accredited theological degree. Schewtschenko is no stranger
to many LCC congregations and people, since he has made
numerous presentations at conventions and mission festivals
to help stimulate support for the “Foreign Student Mission
Fund” of the Synod. This fund enables LCC to provide for
training key leaders in its mission partner churches around
the world.
The Service of Ordination is set for 3:00 p.m. at Holy
Cross, 322 East Avenue at Stirling, in Kitchener. LCC
pastors in the area are encouraged to come and participate
in the laying-on of hands. They should arrive at the church
by 2:30 at the latest and bring along a red stole. President
Bugbee will serve as festival preacher for the service. He
will be assisted at the ordination by Holy Cross pastor,
Rev. Roland Syens, who was a formative influence on Oleg
many years ago while Syens served as LCC’s evangelistic
missionary in Ukraine. |

District Mission Prayer . . .
Dear Heavenly Father, who would have all to be saved, we
praise You for the ministry of the Word carried on by
Missionary Javed Akhter among Hindus and Muslims,
Indians and Pakistanis in Hamilton and St. Catharines.
Guide and bless the continuing Urdu worship at Redeemer
Hamilton on Sunday afternoons with new contacts and
increased participation, and plant the seed of faith in
hearts, especially during this Lenten season as new prayer
meetings are being held in various homes there. Grant a
resolution to the scheduling problem that delays the start
of Urdu worship in Mississauga, and open a door for youth
and Sunday School activities at Redeemer. By Your Word,
grant that a growing knowledge of the truth will permeate
all involved in this cross-cultural work, for the salvation
of souls, through the only One who is the Way, the Truth and
the Life. Amen. |

CLAIM releases devotion booklet . . .
Proclaim His Name – Our Almighty God has given
Himself many Names as He speaks to us in His Word. Each Name
tells us something specific about Him and His relationship
with us. Proclaim His Name is a series of 28
devotions which focus on those Names and God’s demonstration
of His love to us: compassion, protection, guidance,
forgiveness, strength and peace. Each Name shows us how our
Gracious God provides for our every need, both temporal and
spiritual. Share the devotions with friends who need
assurance, peace and hope! Use them as an outreach tool
considering questions and answers about our loving and
gracious God. Proclaim His Name may be downloaded

Mission Prayer . . .
Dear Heavenly Father, how blessed is the Word of Life
mission in Guelph, that You have granted the spiritual gifts
of patience and faithfulness to the volunteer pastors Aaron
Rubach, Earl Allsopp, Bill Gillisie and Jim Keller as they
persevere in the preaching and teaching of Your Word there.
Guide many of our LCC members in the area of Fergus and
Guelph to catch a vision of a strong Lutheran presence in
this centre, so that they may lift up the arms of these
spiritual leaders as they plan to reach out in door-to-door
canvass in the Spring and a Mission Festival in the Fall, so
that souls may be drawn to the worship centre at the
Trillium Waldorf School, and a strong church in mission may
be planted there. We praise You for the continued support
that the 125th Anniversary District Thankoffering grants for
this outreach, and that You will bless the faithful planting
of the seed of the Word, that in due course it brings forth
much fruit, according to Your gracious will. Hear us for the
sake of Christ our only Saviour. Amen |

Prayers for Mission . . .
Collect for missions from our Department for Outreach. We
encourage our pastors to include them or ideas from them in
the General Prayer on Sundays in our East District

District’s EN3 so that the requests do not overload the
prayer time, but it is a weekly feature so that there is a
regular input in our prayers regarding District Mission

Intercultural Mission Work in the GTA
(for January 31 bulletin)
Dear Heavenly Father, Your Son has directed us to make
disciples of all people groups through baptism and the
teaching of Your Word. You have raised up Rev. James
Luke from the Pakistani people to work among the Sikhs,
Muslims and Hindus in the Greater Toronto Area. Grant
him boldness and deep love in this outreach, and give
wisdom from above to Rev. Gerhard Wilch as he
co-ordinates this work as Missionary Luke involves all
the Lutheran churches in our fellowship in this
intercultural ministry among the estimated
three-quarters of a million souls in these spiritual
groups. Let the guidance of Your Holy Spirit prevail in
this daunting task, for we know it is not by might, not
by power, but by the Spirit through the Word of God that
your kingdom comes. To that end, stir up the prayer,
monetary and personnel support to engage in this
strategic urban target in Canada, for we know that
righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to
any people. We pray this through the one Mediator
between God and man, Jesus, the Righteous One. Amen.

Vancouver 2010 Olympics . . .
Two
resources have been developed by ABC District
pastors with the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games in mind. We
want to offer them to the pastors and laity of other
Districts as well. The first resource is a sermon series
prepared by ABC District pastors. These sermons and/or
sermon outlines can be edited or used as is. There are also
related prayers and children's messages. Some of the
contributors have included notes and additional material
that will be useful in sermon preparation. Secondly, we
offer daily devotions for each day of the able-bodied
Olympics and the Paralympics. These devotions have been
prepared by Rev. Chuck Cooley, pastor of Grace Lutheran
Church in Osoyoos and St. Paul, Oliver. To download, visit

Matching Funds — Haiti Donations:
The Haiti Lutheran Mission Society can now
clearly and definitely state that it is eligible to receive
matching funds from the government's Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA) for earthquake relief in Haiti.
HLMS is a registered charitable organization which has been
sending relief aid to Haiti for 26 years, and meets all the
other conditions. Donations must be earmarked for "Haiti
earthquake" and can only be made by individuals. HLMS
wires funds directly to the Lutheran Church of Haiti, so
that supplies are purchased there and trucked quickly to the
needy. Because many Lutheran congregations have been
severely affected by the earthquake, HLMS is focusing on
reaching them with its aid. HLMS is also a listed service
organization of LCC. We pray that a timely and long-term
response to this disaster will be used by our Lord to
prepare many Haitians to turn from voodoo to Christ.
Donations may be mailed to Haiti Lutheran Mission Society,
400 Glenridge Ave., St. Catharines, ON L2T 3L2.

News Update:
Pastor
Revenel Benoit of the Lutheran Church of
Haiti (LCH) reported Saturday that 45 Lutheran churches were
destroyed by the earthquake, and LCMS World Relief reported
on Friday that the Lutheran pastors in the affected area
were safe but busy conducting funerals. HLMS will surely be
in this earthquake aid business for the long haul, for
reconstruction will likely take a few years. Pastor Benoit's
stone quarry in Gonaives should be of great help.

Parochial School
Start in Moncton, NB (January 24)
O Lord, You have instructed us to feed Your lambs. To this
end You have led Your people in Moncton, NB to begin the
Concordia Academy of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Give
wisdom and strength to Pastor David Milette, his flock, and
the newly elected Board of Directors drawn from LCC members
in three provinces. Grant them steadfastness to confess the
one true faith, clarity of purpose, faithfulness of
vocation, boldness of imagination, singularity of voice and
explicit communication so that the body of believers may
establish this Lutheran school to Your glory and the welfare
of their neighbours, through Jesus, the Good Shepherd of the
sheep and lambs. |
Pray for Haiti . . .
Dear heavenly Father, who cares for all Your children in
need and can turn even the worst of evils into good; we pray
for those affected by the earthquake in Haiti; that You, for
the sake of Jesus our great Healer and Saviour will help
those who are attempting to rescue trapped survivors and to
bring aid to all sufferers; comfort the bereaved, heal the
wounded; give shelter to the homeless and food to the
hungry; support the efforts of the Lutheran Church of Haiti
to minister to the afflicted, demonstrating Your love in
deed and with Your saving Gospel; and assist our friends
Walter and Howard Bogusat to return safely to Canada.
We thank and praise You for the loving care and the
immediate financial response of members of Lutheran
Church-Canada congregations to help alleviate the pain of
those suffering in the midst of the disaster. Amen.

Seeking
Ideas . . .
Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sudbury
will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary hopefully
in September. We are looking for ideas for anniversary
celebrations from our sister churches. Things we are looking
for are liturgy ideas, songs that were sung, banners made,
table favors given, what people would have done differently,
would have improved upon. We are working with a small
congregation but would still like to plan a celebration of
the faithfulness that God has given us since we last
celebrated as an extra-special occasion 25 years ago. Would
it be worthwhile to send invitations if we could find
addresses to all former confirmands, marriages, baptisms
etc. or should it just be specified to certain years? Were
picture collages made? What did they include? What else did
you do besides a service and supper? Any help you can give
would be appreciated. Does anyone reading this note have any
pictures that they think we could use. If so copies of them
would be appreciated. Thank you! Any info can be sent to me

CHANGES to The Canadian Lutheran and East District News . .
.
As you
may have read at
www.lutheranchurch.ca
on
January 5, 2010, LCC is updating its communication mix. The
Canadian Lutheran will now be published 6 times per year
rather than the previous nine times. The District news
section will be increased to six pages in each issue from
the current four. This means that we can now accept longer
articles—up to 600 words. Of course, we still love to see
the photos too. As LCC places greater emphasis on electronic
news distribution, a story may be published in more than one
location—in the printed Canadian Lutheran; in InfoDigest; or
on LCC’s website. We ask that you submit your news articles
to
ilene@lcceastdistrict.ca
immediately following congregational events so your story
may be distributed in the most appropriate way. We still
need your print stories approximately six weeks prior to the
publication month. |

Many of you have been asking and wondering about the Bogusat
Mission Trip to Haiti that was due to return home today,

today. Please keep in your prayers, the Bogusat mission
team, members of the Lutheran Church of Haiti, and all those
affected by the destructive force of yesterday’s earthquake.
The earthquake was also felt in the Dominican Republic where
Missionary Rev. Ted Krey is serving. He and his family are
safe and well. Please also include the Krey family and the
Dominican Republic in your prayers. |

Hamilton Sudanese Mission (January 17)
Dear Heavenly Father, we have prayed that the Lord of the
harvest would send forth labourers into the harvest field,

heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Hear

PRAYER: Danielson Family
We pray for the Danielson family as Rev. Mark Danielson
(Trinity, Fisherville) travels to be with his ailing father
in Seattle. We ask for God’s speed and the strength and
comfort that comes alone from the Holy Spirit in times like
these. Pastor Mark leaves Jan. 2 and is uncertain when he
will return. |
PRAYER: Schultz Family
Paul and Lori Schultz (Grace, St. Catharines) request that
we keep Eileen Schultz, Paul’s mom, in our prayers as she
struggles with critical illness. Please also pray for
strength and comfort for the entire Schultz family. Paul, as
you know, is a member of the East District Board of
Directors and Lori is a Director of Parish Services at
Grace, St. Catharines. |
PRAYER: Bogusat Trip to Haiti
Please pray for my team as we journey to Haiti this Wednesday
(Jan 6). We will overnight in Florida and go to Haiti on
Thursday morning (Jan 7) — returning on Jan. 13th. The
main attraction this time is the dedication of another
"Christ Lutheran Church" in Poto, just outside Gonaives.
Pastor Charles was the first pastor to come after Pastor
Benoit. The money came from Canada and 2/3 of it came from a
donor in our congregation, who wishes to remain anonymous.
The other 1/3 came from a family in the Kitchener area. It
is 85' x 35' so it is no small affair. I was kidding Pastor
Benoit that he didn't have the biggest Church in LCH
anymore. He was fine with that, of course. His own building
is woefully too small. With all the mission efforts they
have totally overgrown their Sanctuary and are spilling into
the courtyard and beyond. We will be staying at a new Guest
House and will be the first guests. After the flood a group
from the States decided that they could no longer keep up an
orphanage in Gonaives and so that building became
available at distress pricing. The money for that also came
from Canada by way of a loan. It is interesting that we here
in Canada might use a building for a week or two and then
have the official opening ceremonies, but in Haiti all must
wait until we get there and do the honours! We also will be
visiting a Water Filter Factory in the capital. We hope to
get these filters into the schools which have the feeding
program as well. We were to partner with the Rotary in up
state NY, but they have been dragging their feet for some
two years now, so we wish to see if they can't be
circumvented. Pray for safety, no health issues,
success in getting these filters, and rejoice that God's

PRAYER: for a new ministry – Background information:
Loving Saviour Ministries in Tuscany and surrounding
communities are located in North West Calgary. During
services please pray for the people living there and ask God
to use the ministry of Loving Saviour to accomplish His work
in their lives. LCC, ABC District
For Jan. 10, 2010 . . .
P:
Lord of the nations, Whose earthly ministry began when You
were baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan river, send
Your Holy Spirit on Pastor Mike Kuhn and Loving Saviour Mission
in North West Calgary as they publicly gather around Your
Word and Sacraments for the first time today. Move those
who gather at Loving Saviour to
serve their neighbours in Christian love; empower and
embolden them to confess Your holy name and saving Gospel
before the people of northwest Calgary, so that Your name
might be magnified and Your kingdom might come to many who
do not yet know You as Lord and Saviour.
Lord, in Your mercy,
C:
Hear our prayer. |
