In the February 2005 edition of the LCMS Reporter,
an article by Jeff Crilley (an award-winning reporter and
pastor's son) suggests some practical steps to getting special
(and free) publicity.
1) Be unusual – the old adage, "man bites
dog" still hold true. The news doesn't cover what's normal, but
"abnormal."
2) Be visual – reporters tell stories with pictures.
In Grimsby, we often got on the front page at Christmastide in colour, in both papers, for free, by inviting the newspaper to
our outdoor Christmas pageant where they invariably snapped a
photo of Joseph and Mary on a donkey.
3) Chose the right
reporter – get to know your local people. Seek them out. Maybe
take them out to Tim's for a coffee and donut.
4) Use the phone – rather than email or fax, call the reporter and invite them
to the event or at least tell them what you're sending them.
5)
Wait for a slow news day – take out your calendar and begin
circling government holidays, as well as the days before and
after major holidays. Pitch even an average story on these days
and you're more likely to get coverage.

Outreach through Prayer:
During the Prayer of the Church, consider praying for
issues in your community. For example, in one edition of the
"Let us Pray" resource published on line by the LCMS Commission
on Worship (if you haven't seen it yet, sign up at:
https://www.lcms.org/ca/www/enews/login.asp), a petition
was included for those "who lack the necessities of life," and
"those in nursing homes." Might you also include petitions for
those in the community who are ill or in special need,
especially should they be friends or neighbours of your members?
Of course, in these days of privacy legislation, their
permission would need to be sought. But what a witness it is to
not only say "I will pray for you," but "can our church pray for
you?" Our experience in Grimsby was that we became known in the
community as a caring congregation. And, when the Lord answered
those prayers with healing (sometimes miraculously), he received
the glory and we had opportunity to give testimony to his love
and faithfulness.

Witnessing Business Card:
Clarington
Lutheran Church has developed a "business card" that takes a
different twist. On the front, instead of the pastor's name, is
a blank space to write in the name of the member (or pastor)
giving it out. On the back is a notice about the time of Divine
Service, a simple map, and contact information for the church.

the true meaning of Easter. The outside is yellow and reads: "Easter

Sponsor a Sports Team?
sometimes community sports teams are a major competitor to our
church activities. One of our pastors has suggested co-opting
them as an outreach vehicle by sponsoring a team by purchasing
their t-shirts. Wouldn't it be nice to see "St. _____ Lutheran
Church" alongside those of car dealerships and restaurants? Of
course, you would want to make sure the team does not play on
Sunday mornings!

Sunday Morning Outreach:
Sunday mornings may be a good time to do some door-to-door
evangelism. What better time to find the un-churched or de-churched at
home. Summer might be especially good when service times are
earlier, allowing you to hit the streets with your church
brochure or invitations between 11-12 or so.
